63-60 is a Formula Junior, not a Formula Vee !
The frame is a bit different in the rear than a standard Formcar and is marked "FJ-03", the body is marked "63-60".
It was built in the Boston area from a wrecked 1954 Porsche 356.
It has a 1100cc (64x73.5) Porsche push rod engine, twin 40mm Solex, close ratio 719 Porsche gear box (ex 550), Porsche brakes.
Before 1963, not everyone thought FV would replace FJ. This car was a failure in period and spent a long time in a shed.
As far as I know, it only ran one time at Thompson in '63.
I think the construction took too long and by the time the car was finished, FJ was over and it never had much of a chance. It could never be converted to FV, so it just went into the shed.
There were a number of other VW and Porsche based "specials" made during this time. Lots of experiments and interesting things went on in that period.
The car is not for sale, I have spent a lot of time and money on it, and plan to use it for a few years.
There was another Formcar-Porsche which won some races in 1965, including a national championship but in the Formula B class. This was for 1500cc push rod engines, Porsche 356 engine in a Formcar chassis. I have always wondered what happened to that one” |
